The Roanoke Valley Branch of the National League of American Pen Women is proud to announce the winners of the 2007 Poetry Contest.
First Place:
Andrea L. Watson, Taos, New Mexico, for “I am clothing this poem in skin” and “Skin”
Second Place:
Margaret J. Reynolds, Springfield, VA, for “Fractures”
Third Place:
William B. Spillman, Jr, Floyd, VA, for “Mill Town Blues”
Honorable Mentions:
Mary Katherine Williams, Paint Bank, VA, for “Buttons and a Thimble”
Mildred Barthel, North Logan, Utah, for “Home at Last”
Melanie Cregger, Troutville, VA, for “Where I’m From”
The contest received 122 different entries. The poems were judged by Melanie Almeder. Almeder is a creative writing professor at Roanoke College and a widely published young poet whose work has appeared in a range of journals. Her first book of poetry, On Dream Street, won the Editor's Prize by Tupelo Press and will be published in May.
